Timbuktu library a source of SA pride

first_img5 November 2012The Timbuktu manuscripts must be preserved because they reflect the contribution of the African mind to the human story. This is according to Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, who was speaking in Johannesburg on Friday at the launch of a book about the construction of the Ahmed Institute of Higher Learning and Islamic Research in Mali. The building was constructed to house the historic manuscripts of African scholars dating back some 800 years. The largest collection of manuscripts, numbering about 30 000, is housed in the institute, named after the famous scholar Ahmed Baba, who lived from 1556 to 1627. The rest of the texts are housed in the private libraries of families in and around the city.Entitled “Building an African Partnership”, the book tells the story of the cooperation of South Africa and Mali in constructing the building, dating from 2001, when then President Thabo Mbeki first mooted the idea, to 2009, when the new impressive structure was officially opened.Motlanthe paid tribute to Mbeki for showing “remarkable foresight in understanding the intrinsic value of the manuscripts”.Motlanthe said the exceptional cooperation between South Africa and Mali reflected close ties forged over the years. However, he expressed concern over the threats posed to the building by armed rebels. “I hope that no human will be so base as to threaten these treasures.”Essop Pahad, chairperson of the Timbuktu Trust, said now that the book had been published, the trust would fold and the project would be handed over to the Department of Arts and Culture.Deputy Arts and Culture Minister Joe Phaahla pledged South Africa’s continued support in preserving the manuscripts. He expressed hope that the conflict in Mali would be resolved and the manuscripts saved.“One can only hope that through the intervention of the African Union, the political situation in Mali will be normalised as soon as possible, and work that is still pending regarding this project will be resumed without any further hurdles,” Phaahla said.Source: SANews.gov.zalast_img read more

SaaS — Software Deployment Model of the Future?

first_imgBy now you’ve probably heard of the buzzword acronym SaaS — Software as a Service.  SaaS is a software deployment model where a service is made available to the customer via a network, typically the Internet.  CRM applications deployed as SaaS have been particularly successful, notably software by Salesforce.com, NetSuite, and Open Source SugarCRM.  SaaS software offerings are now beginning to show up in areas like ERP, BI, SFA, MRP, and Document Management. The SaaS model has a lot of positives.  Big pluses for this strategy is that it can free up a lot of infrastructure and startup costs are small.  With SaaS, the customer doesn’t see any installation media.  They don’t need to spec out and buy any servers or disk arrays.  They don’t need to dedicate people to train, support, and maintain the software.  Hardware and Software updates become transparent.  Software updates and patches get rolled out frequently and automatically, and the customer can be confident that they are always running on the most recent version of the software.  Overall, the SaaS model can make a lot of sense, especially for SMEs where IT infrastructure can be a distraction from the core focus of the business. With the SaaS software subscription model, customers have the luxury of being able to turn the service on or off like a utility, or to scale the number of active users up and down, as needed.  They only pay for what they use.  And if the software service doesn’t meet their expectations, it is easy to pull the plug. While there are a lot of pluses, SaaS may still not yet be an acceptable solution for large companies.  Even though software has become more customizable, many large companies will probably find that today’s generation of SaaS offerings isn’t sufficient.  And the higher exposure to risk from storing company data on third-party servers accessable via the internet probably is also not acceptable.  But the upside may outweigh these issues for many smaller companies.SaaS is the current buzzword.  Ten years ago, the buzzword was ASP and on-demand or utility computing.  In terms of the deployment model and the potential benefits between now and ten years ago, there doesn’t really seem to be much different between the definitions of ASP and SaaS.  What is different though is how technology has changed over the last ten years.  Bandwidth, CPU and Storage costs have all plummeted.Software Equity Group offers these statistics that show how dramatically costs have changed over the last ten years:– Bandwidth: $1100/megabit/month in 1995 vs. $128/megabit/month in 2005– Cage Space: $175/sqft/month in 1995 vs. $25/sqft/month in 2005– Disk Storage: $1,300,000/TB in 1995 vs. $3,300/TB in 2005 (SCSI RAID)– 1-CPU Server: $25,000 in 1995 vs. $1,000 in 2005 (web server class machine)– 4-CPU Server: $360,000 in 1995 vs. $38,000 in 2005 (with 16GB RAM)On-Demand performance has improved.  Applications have become more customizable.  And, in general, concerns about security have lessened. The business environment is different, and that is why the on-demand model is beginning to work.It looks like the market for on-demand solutions will only grow.  Software Equity Group estimates that currently 10% of software is sold via the SaaS model, but they expect that in the next 5-10 years that the percentage will grow to more than 25%.The world of ECM and Document Management solutions sold via SaaS is not non-existent, but it is still small.  We expect to see more growth in on-demand Document and Content Management in the near future.  Formtek ECM product is being sold via a subscription model by our partner LSC in the UK.  It’s a business model that is beginning to make a lot of sense and it will be interesting to see what happens with SaaS Document and Content Management.last_img read more

Build Your Own iPhone App with New Service from Sweb Apps

first_imgSweb Apps could function as a way for businesses to distribute mobile coupons, too. With buttons like “Photo Gallery” which can be renamed to anything you like (such as “Coupons” or “Specials”), businesses could update their apps with pre-designed mobile coupons, if they so wished. Lots of Potential, Future PlansNot that long ago, we wondered why there weren’t more iPhone applications for businesses available in the App Store. It’s possible that was because the tools to make building mobile apps easy were simply not good enough. With Sweb Apps, though, this could quickly change. Being able to build a mobile application with no technical know-how using a dead-simple onscreen guide is the sort of mobile service we’re sure many businesses have been dreaming about. (At least we hope so! We would love to track the sales at a few of our favorite local stores via our iPhones.)The company plans to introduce more features into their service in the future including premium buttons, Flash-based content (assuming Apple ever approves Flash on the iPhone), in-app advertising opportunities, and more. Next year, the company also plans to launch app builders for other mobile platforms including Android, Blackberry, and Palm Pre. A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… A company called Sweb Apps has just launched a new service which lets anyone build iPhone apps, even if you don’t have a technical background. The service is aimed primarily at small to medium-sized businesses who don’t have an in-house or on-call engineering team capable of developing mobile applications. Instead, using the Sweb Apps website, business owners can create their own iPhone application themselves in as little as five minutes, says the company. On the newly launched site at swebapps.com, a big orange button reading “Start Building” is all you need to click to get started creating your own iPhone application. Then, only six steps later, you’ll have a completed iPhone application ready for App Store submission, a process which Sweb Apps will handle for you, too. How to Build Your AppSince the service is designed for businesses, one of the first steps is to select your particular industry from the provided categories. At the moment, these include: Restaurant, Retail Store, Business, Non-Profit, Government, Education, Entertainment, and Customization, a category which lets you design your own personalized app if what you’re creating doesn’t fit into one of the other categories. Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… From within each of these sections, there are various buttons to choose from. For example, in the “Restaurant” category, you can add buttons like “menu,” “reservations,” “map,” etc. There are even buttons for Facebook and Twitter which allow you to direct customers to your Facebook and Twitter profiles. Sample layouts are provided, too. After picking your buttons, you create your Sweb Apps account and submit the information about your business. The fifth step is to customize the application with your business’s personalized info. In the case of the restaurant app, for example, that would mean filling out the menu, listing your hours and address, and so on. The final step is to submit payment. Prices vary depending on which package you choose. Packages with 4 buttons are $200, 6 buttons are $300, and 8 buttons are $400. In addition, Sweb Apps charges a $50 one-time setup fee and a $25/month hosting fee. For an extra $10/month, business owners can optionally choose to add on a simple analytics package called “App Tracker” which lets you track the number of downloads and button clicks. By tracking this sort of information, it’s easy to tell which buttons are accessed most and which are being ignored, allowing you to re-design the app to better engage your customers. Customizations While the process of app building is extremely simple, and yes, we were able to create a basic app in a matter of minutes (we stopped short of paying for it of course!), the end result is a somewhat basic-looking application. But there are a couple of things you can do to spruce it up a little. For one, you’re able to select your own background color, and this can even be a custom color of your choosing. Sweb Apps also lets you upload your own button images instead of using the defaults provided. This would definitely give your app a more unique and personalized look, so it’s worth looking into. If you’re not all that handy with Photoshop yourself, it would be a good idea to hire a designer or crowdsource the project through a site like 99Designs or CrowdSpring and have someone create custom buttons for you. The Best Part: Real-Time Updates! If anything ever changes and needs to be updated, you simply return to your Sweb Apps account and make the changes there. Instead of waiting on Apple to approve the update as is done with traditional iPhone applications, the updates to Sweb Apps go live in real-time thanks to the company’s hosted Content Management System. With Sweb Apps, all the app’s content is housed in the company’s own database which is why it’s able to be updated on-the-fly (and why there’s a monthly hosting fee). The possibilities here are endless. This feature allows a business to promote one-time events, specials, coupons, sales, or anything else that would be offered on a limited time basis. This, in fact, may be the best feature of the app builder. Real-time communication with your customer base through the mobile is exactly what applications should provide, but when relying on Apple and their mysterious approval process, the delays involved often prevent this from happening. sarah perezcenter_img Related Posts Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#web 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Tiny Houses Replace Tents for Homeless

first_imgMost of the money went into site improvementsA cursory look at the numbers makes the little houses look awfully expensive. According to the Quixote Village web site, the $3.05 million total included permit fees, road improvements and infrastructure. Each cottage cost $87,789, the website says, which translates to $610 a square foot.Miller says the community building plus some site improvements cost $420,000, while the houses and the bulk of the extensive site improvements amounted to $2.63 million. On their own, each house would cost $19,000, Miller said. That’s about $131 per square foot. Architect Sarah Susanka made a big splash with her 1998 book The Not So Big House, arguing that Americans didn’t need sprawling drywall palaces with two-story foyers and rooms that people rarely used. She wanted designers and homeowners to go on an architectural diet.Susanka might not have been thinking of micro-houses barely big enough for a bed and chair. But very small houses are gaining ground, and in one Washington State community they’ve become an innovative way of getting homeless people out of leaky tents and under a dry roof.In an article published this week, New York Times writer Michael Tortorello describes a settlement called Quixote Village just outside Olympia, WA. Each of the 30 houses is 8 ft. by 18 ft., or 144 square feet. The houses were designed by Garner Miller, an architect and LEED accredited professional with MSGS Architects. Last Christmas Eve, Tortorello wrote, these new rentals were turned over to what members of a “homeless community called Camp Quixote, a floating tent city that moved more than 20 times after its founding in 2007.”The project, on land the county leases for $1 a year, includes a community building with a kitchen, dining area and showers. Total costs were $3.05 million, according to the Quixote Village website, which came from federal, state, county and local sources. Miller cut his fee in half, and other professionals working on the project also donated services. Designs differ from typical tiny houseMiller said by email that the idea of higher-end tiny houses gathered steam partly through the work of Marianne Cusato, whose Katrina Cottages were designed to house victims of Hurricane Katrina. In fact, there are a number of companies that sell very small houses online, including Four Lights, Tumbleweed Tiny House Co., and Molecule Tiny Homes. But the Quixote houses, Miller said, are different in concept.“The typical tiny house contains everything needed by the resident, including the kitchen, and usually starts at 500 sq. ft. and up,” Miller wrote. “It is still an individual and isolated way of living. The Quixote Village concept creates 144-square-foot cottages that contain only a sitting/sleeping room, a bathroom and a closet. Everything else — the kitchen, laundry, showers, living room — is in the shared community building.“Quixote Village is closer to communal living,” Miller added, “where 30 residents share meals and spend time together, which they believe is a healthier way to live. “The Quixote houses are stick-framed with 2×4 walls on 16-inch centers sheathed with OSB. On the inside, 2x2s run horizontally 24 inches on-center and walls are covered with 1/2-inch plywood. The framing creates a 5-inch wall cavity, which is filled with batt insulation, Miller said, adding that the design reduces the amount of thermal bridging through the wall.“By adding the 2x2s, the only place thermal transfer can occur is where the horizontal and vertical studs cross each other, rather than the entire length of a vertical stud in standard construction,” he said. The roof is framed with rafters. The area above the collar ties becomes a small attic, which is filled with 12 inches of batt insulation. Miller said exterior walls include a continuous vapor barrier under the interior plywood, with air leaks around windows minimized with flashing tape and caulk. The siding was installed over a rain screen. For horizontal lap siding, builders used painted 1 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch furring strips. For vertical siding, builders applied horizontal strips of Cor-A-Vent, Miller said.last_img read more
