PREMIERE: Cory Wong Finally Gets “The Koz Nod” On New Collaborative Single, “Friends At Sea”

first_imgCory Wong is quickly becoming one of our favorite guitarists in the live music scene. A frequent collaborator of fan-favorite minimalist funk ensemble, Vulfpeck, Wong is known for his pristine and rhythmically oriented lead guitar style, animated performances, and charismatic onstage demeanor. Outside of Vulfpeck, the musician keeps himself busy with his work with Vulfpeck spin-off The Fearless Flyers, as well as his own solo career touring with the Cory Wong Band. In August, Wong released his sophomore solo album, The Optimist.Recently, Grammy-nominated, platinum-selling saxophonist Dave Koz sat in with Vulfpeck at their two-night run at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre, but his relationship with Cory Wong extends far beyond the surprise collaboration. Earlier this year, Wong set out on his pursuit of “The Koz Nod,” what he described in July’s “Social Experiment” video as “when Dave Koz gives you the nod.”Since setting out on this new goal in pursuit of “The Koz Nod,” Wong has been growing closer to becoming, in his words, “the millennial ambassador of smooth jazz.” In a video he released in August in a further attempt to catch Koz’s attention, Wong showcased his deadpan leanings, offering up a throwback green screen-style video on what it takes to be successful in the wild world of smooth jazz [Spoiler Alert: it’s “a mustache, white pants, and gold jewelry”]. Cory Wong’s determination paid off when he finally got Koz to join him in the studio for a refreshed rendition of The Optimist‘s title track.During that session, the duo also recorded a brand new tune Cory penned just 24 hours beforehand, “Friends At Sea”, affectionately named after Koz’s famed smooth jazz cruise, which Wong will join as a special guest this coming year. Cory Wong and Dave Koz’s upcoming double single, The Koz Nod—featuring both “Friends At Sea” and the revamped “The Optimist” take—will be released digitally this Friday, November 23rd. To commemorate this epic “win,” Wong has also pressed The Koz Nod onto a special edition run of 7″ records.Today, Live For Live Music is excited to premiere Cory Wong and Dave Koz’s new collaboration, “Friends At Sea”, which marks Cory’s first new single since the release of The Optimist this past summer. As Cory Wong explains to Live For Live Music,Recording these songs with Dave is one of the highlights of my musical career, and a testament to the power of community and the internet. During every show I’ve done this past year, I’ve talked about how crazy it is that a guy (Dave Koz) has his own cruise that goes in different parts of the world every year, and sells out before he even announces who is going to be playing on it. He didn’t know when he was practicing his pentatonic scales in 6th grade that he’d be where he is today…or did he?! I’ve been trying to connect with Dave to play on his cruise and get out of Minnesota this winter.Sure enough, after I put out my intentions, we had a bunch of mutual connections trying to get us to connect. Enough people online were trying to get Dave’s attention along with me and it really grabbed his attention. Finally, I got word from Dave and he said he was in.He said he’d come out to Minneapolis and hang/record with me as long as he was in and out in one hour because he had family in MN that he wanted to spend time with. He also said it would be two days from then. So I wrote a song the next day and we were set to go in and record the day after!I was really blown away with how ‘down’ Dave was with the whole thing. He has such a great vibe and was such a blast to hang and play with. Well…it happened. I’m going to Australia with Dave as a special guest on his next cruise. I couldn’t be more stoked! You can check out the Live For Live Music premiere of Cory Wong’s “Friends At Sea” featuring Dave Koz below. If you like what you hear, you can order The Koz Nod 7″ vinyl LP on Cory Wong’s website, with a limited run of 500 pressings available.Cory Wong ft. Share Tweet Sharecenter_img 57 Views   no discussions Share PARIS, France (AFP) — Athletics giant Russia was provisionally suspended from track and field on Friday over accusations of “state-sponsored” doping as the IAAF scrambled to salvage the sport’s credibility just nine months out from the Rio Olympics.“Today we have been dealing with the failure of ARAF (All-Russia Athletic Federation) and made the decision to provisionally suspend them, the toughest sanction we can apply at this time,” IAAF president Sebastian Coe said.“But we discussed and agreed that the whole system has failed the athletes, not just in Russia, but around the world.“This has been a shameful wake-up call and we are clear that cheating at any level will not be tolerated.”last_img read more

Fresh Nani targets new deal

first_img Press Association The Portugal winger’s current deal at United is due to run out at the end of next season and he has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford. However, the 26-year-old is hoping to show Sir Alex Ferguson he deserves a new deal with his performances over the remainder of the campaign as United chase a Barclays Premier League and FA Cup double. He said in several national newspapers: “I want to show the manager that he can trust me and he can believe in me in every match.” Nani is determined to prove his worth to Manchester United in the coming months as he seeks a new and improved contract – and insists his best is yet to come.center_img He added: “I want to show him my contribution can help win games. So I’ll keep working hard to make sure I’m ready to respond every time I get a chance.” Nani has been in and out of the United side this season and was absent for two months after suffering a hamstring injury against Braga in November. However, he has started three of United’s last four matches, including last week’s Champions League last-16 second leg against Real Madrid in which he was controversially sent off, and is eager to keep his spot in the first XI. “Now my confidence is high and I think the best is still to come from me,” he added. “This is my time and I think I can be important for the team in these big games. “Because I was injured for two months, I’m fresh now when some other players are starting to get tired. “I feel I’m in good form and I’ve nearly arrived at my peak. I think over the next few games I can surprise a few people.” last_img read more

Syracuse announces construction of new indoor practice facility

first_imgConstruction of a new $17-million indoor practice center will begin later this year, Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross announced Tuesday. The football team will be the primary tenants of the 87,000 square foot facility, but all athletic programs will utilize the center.“This practice center will give our football program, and our other programs, the opportunity to prepare, practice and play amongst the best in the nation, while providing the best possible environment for the development of all of our special student-athletes,” Gross said in a SU Athletics press release. “Like the Carmelo Anthony Center has helped our men’s and women’s basketball programs compete at the highest level, this critical new center will continue our football program’s momentum, and is absolutely essential in our pursuit of top-level student-athletes and conference championships.”The facility will be built at the site currently occupied by the Joseph Vielbig Outdoor Track Stadium. The location of the new practice facility also means a new track facility will be built on South Campus, merging with the current site used for field events. The center’s construction represents the fourth phase of improvements being made to the Orange’s football facilities. Syracuse previously renovated the football wing at Manley Field House, built a new strength and conditioning facility and practice fields, and renovated the sports medicine center.AdvertisementThis is placeholder text“This commitment will give our student-athletes a first-rate complex to utilize as we move to the ACC and compete for championships,” football coach Scott Shafer said in the press release. “With our outstanding staff, this building puts us on par or ahead of our competitors in the new league, and will attract and help us develop the kind of outstanding citizens and student-athletes required to win at this level.” Comments Published on February 26, 2013 at 4:47 pm Contact David: [email protected] | @DBWilson2 Facebook Twitter Google+last_img read more

CSOs Brainstorm on Citizens’ Participations in Public Policy

first_imgA conglomeration of civil society organizations led by the New African Research and Development Agency (NARDA) has begun a two-day consultative dialogue to assess impacts government is making in informing citizens about major policies that affect them. The meeting is also meant to share views on how Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) themselves are carrying on their work to impact the end users for whom they seek donor support.During the opening session of the dialogue on June 11, 2015 at a local hotel in Monrovia, the keynote speaker, Dr. Amos C. Sawyer among other things reminded CSOs that for any organization to be successful in meeting its goals, it must have clear rules of membership to know who the members.Dr. Sawyer added that any successful organization must have rules to indicate how positions are filled with clear cut mechanisms in place for accountability and transparency. He, however, noted that many civil society organizations are fostering self interest above the interests of those for whom they claim to work, adding, “I consider many civil societies here to be business entities because they seek self interest which does not show the clear meaning of CSO but business. He indicated that the proper role of a CSO is disseminating and generating knowledge based information.Dr. Sawyer further stressed that a civil society organization that wants to be well recognized for good work in the interest of the people will seek to provide knowledge through training that will allow people to clearly understand what it stands for than just engaging in advocacy.Combining CSOs, Government and private sector based on roles, Dr. Sawyer who is the Chairman of the Governance Commission said since Government is there to provide security and the framework, private sector there to create the business and civil society there to monitor and exactly tell how the ordinary people live their lives, they are better suited to work together for the common good of the country and its citizens. In a cross section of views during comments and questions, representatives of various civil society groups brought out issues indicating shortfalls of CSOs in implementing their goals with respect to what they focus on in their work. The dialogue under the theme, “Making spaces for citizens,” allowed the participants to in some views suggest that civil societies have the space but are not using it the proper way because of conflict of interest.According to some views, many civil society organizations are not on time in their advocacies and other works because they have to rely on donors that cannot come in with funds soon.Others on the other hand noted that conflicts arising in concession areas in the country are caused by failure of government to include locals in signing agreements.Citing references to Golden Veroleum and other concessionaires, the participants said because they are not part of the policy and agreements, they react the way they do since policies and agreements reached with concession companies directly affect them (locals). The chairperson of the National Civil Society Organizations of Liberia, Frances Greaves noted that there are fine policies written in Liberia, but implementers are not knowledgeable about them and so they abuse offices and dictate to people. She said most government officials instead of seeing themselves as servant of the people exert force to show superiority and power in discharge of their duties.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
