South African art sets new record

first_imgIrma Stern’s Bahora Girl is the highest-selling South African artwork to date. Bosveld by Pierneef also commanded ahefty price. One of Stern’s paintings was recently auctioned for R26.4-million (US$3.8-million), setting a new world record for South African art.Stern’s Bahora Girl, an oil on canvas painting, achieved the record-breaking price at an auction of South African art held in October at London-based auction house Bonhams, one of the world’s oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques.Stephan Wells, MD of Strauss & Co Fine Art Auctioneers and Consultants in Johannesburg, said that her work satisfied the criteria of what buyers want.“Besides being good art, it is bold and cheerful. She was also a colourful person in her own right and she is undoubtedly one of South Africa’s best artists,” Wells said.South African art in the spotlight“There is a renewed confidence in South African art,” said Wells.Stern’s work, in particular, has been doing very well. The value of her work escalated from approximately R7-million ($1-million), to R13-million ($1.9-million) to the recent record-breaking price of R26.4-million ($3.8-million) in less than six years, which according to Wells is a rapid increase in value.Previously, Stern’s Still Life with Gladioli and Fruit sold for R7 575 200 ($1.1-million), and soon afterwards another one of her paintings sold for R13 368 000 ($2-million). Bahora Girl doubled this price. It is also encouraging that South African collectors bought all three works. “It is a known fact that works of art sell best in their country of origin and the people who bought these artworks are serious collectors and buyers,” said Wells. He added that more people are realising the value of art as a good investment and as the economy shows signs of recovery from the recession, more people will think about investing in art.“With uncertainty about interest rates, the property market and the stock market, art is proving to be a sound investment,” he said.More young people are also showing interest in buying art, with Strauss’s clientele no longer starting in the 40s age group.Finding inspiration in ZanzibarAccording to Bonhams, Stern had a keen interest in the exotic and visited Zanzibar in 1930 and 1945. Her travels to the island, known for its rich history, Arab culture, colour and spices served as great inspiration for some of her most acclaimed work.Giles Peppiatt, head of South African Art at Bonhams, said in one of the auction house’s catalogues that another striking feature of Bahora Girl is that it comes with its original Zanzibar frame. This particular portrait belongs to a group of works Stern completed in 1945. All her works in this period explore the lives of the people of Zanzibar. Peppiatt said that these works are “strongly expressive in style” and they represent the best of Stern’s portraiture at this time in her career. He also said that the artist’s most valued portraits are those in Zanzibar frames. Stern loved the beautifully carved woodwork found in Zanzibar, and she shipped many examples back home to Cape Town. She found the woodwork so beautiful that she even exchanged her own front door for one from Zanzibar.Celebrated South African artistIrma Stern is a South African art icon and achieved national and international acclaim. She is known for her versatility and worked with numerous media, including oils, watercolour, gouache (an opaque water-based paint that dries to a dense matte finish), charcoal, ceramics and sculpture. The Irma Stern Museum, run by the University of Cape Town and the trustees of the Irma Stern Estate, was established in 1971 in the house where she lived for almost four decades. The museum is both a tribute to her life and a platform for other artists. Some of the rooms in the house still have the furnished interiors as arranged by the artist. Upstairs, a commercial gallery for contemporary South African artists is available for hire. A temporary exhibition programme is also presented annually.According to the museum’s records, Stern had a very specific way of working. She didn’t like to be disturbed while working, and often put up “Do not disturb” signs at the studio. It is also believed that she painted while chain smoking and drinking strong black coffee. She liked to be involved in every aspect of her trade. She reportedly framed her own work, packed exhibitions by herself and took care of her own sales.Stern travelled widely throughout her career to Europe, Southern Africa, Zanzibar and the Congo. Many of her destinations inspired her art and she also had the opportunity to build up an extensive collection of artefacts for her home.During her lifetime, she held almost 100 solo exhibitions in South Africa and European countries such as Germany, France, Italy and England. As is the case with many renowned artists in history, at first her work wasn’t acknowledged in South Africa, her country of birth. However, from the 1940s she started achieving success locally.South African art gaining popularityOther Irma Stern works exceeded auction expectations. Her Still life of Gladioli on a draped table sold for R5.9-million ($869 000). The oil on canvas Still life with bignonia and Port St John’s creeper sold for R2-million ($292 000), but was estimated at R1.1-million ($162 000) to R1.7-million ($244 000).Works by other esteemed local artists also performed well at the latest Bonhams auction. A piece titled Bosveld by Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, one of South Africa’s most prominent artists, fetched a higher than expected price of R8-million ($1.2-million). The work was expected to sell for R2.2-million ($324 000) to R3.3-million ($487 000).A work by Alexis Preller titled Apollo Kouros 1 was expected to sell for between R879 000 ($130 000) and R1.3-million ($195 000), but fetched R2.8-million ($409 000). In another world record price, Ruth Everard Haden‘s Serenitas fulgens sold for R1.6-million ($234 000). Its selling price was estimated at R330 000 ($49 000) to R550 000 ($81 000).last_img read more

Gen Z Brings a Whole New Dynamic to the Workforce

first_img Gen Z is entering the workforce at a rapid pace, with the eldest of them now 23. A far larger group than their millennial counterparts, youth and young adults born between the mid-1990s and late 2000s have aptly been named Gen Z. Employers should be excited as a flood of talent will be joining the workforce soon — comprising 36 percent of the workforce by 2020 — but be aware, they have short attention spans, even shorter than millennials, and expect a lot from their employers. With this massive influx of new talent, the workplace is once again going to experience significant change. These five tips will get you ready for the new arrivals.1. Position yourself as a technology-based company. These digital natives are looking to get ahead in the workplace by leveraging technology and collaboration strategies. This is evidenced by Google, Amazon, and Apple being three of the top six most desirable employers and 75 percent of high school students having indicated interest in STEM fields according to the National Society of High School Scholars. If you aren’t a tech startup, it is in your interest to prepare your company by having an end-to-end software strategy or tech-enabled workplace that works across various devices. Having seamless and usable software is particularly important as 60 percent of Gen Z indicated that they won’t use an app or website if it is too slow. They also prioritize the ability to access information and people instantly, and expect cross-functional teamwork. Optimize communication through collaborative workspace software options such as Slack, a file management system like Dropbox or any other alternative. Ensure that there is company-wide training so that your current and future employees can collaborate well regardless of their age or experience.Related: Millennials Are Old News: What Does Generation Z Want From Work?2. Real-time development and feedback.A Robert Half Study indicated that Gen Z’s top priority when considering prospective employers is the opportunity for growth, and identified it as an important retention tool for Gen Z employers. Gen Z are voracious learners who are eager to expand their skillsets through formal and informal development opportunities and crave frequent and consistent feedback. The annual performance review just won’t cut it. Ensure that you establish a development plan in partnership your Gen Z talent. Create a timeline, define formal learning opportunities, establish informal feedback mechanisms for ongoing two-way performance dialogue, and where possible, provide mentorship and individualized support. Development is essential because Gen Z is entering the workforce at an earlier age — foregoing post-secondary education in many cases, meaning on-the-job training must address any skills gaps.It is worthy to note, these gaps are different than with previous generations, and you may have to offer training for some soft skills such as interpersonal communication.Related: These Are the Companies That Millennials and Gen Zers Most Want to Work for3. Focus on your employment brand and candidate experience.Your organization’s first impression is crucial in generating high-quality applicants. They expect diversity, fair treatment and a respectful environment. Gen Z wants employers that are collaborative, honest and involved in their community, and it’s important to make sure that the candidate experience convinces applicants that they do want to work at your company. Treat candidates like clients, focusing on clear communication and timely follow-up. Ensure the careers section of your website is usable and attractive, make your job description wording authentic and reflective of your culture, get a certification that reflects your values, and keep the application process simple and transparent.4. Offer benefits that encourage a balanced lifestyle.According to a Deloitte study, Gen Z values employment that allows them to live a balanced lifestyle even more so than Millennials, with a greater emphasis on physical, mental and social well-being. They want flexibility and control within their schedules. For example, they want to be able to go to an afternoon doctor’s appointment without feeling like it reflects poorly on their work ethic. Employers must investigate providing flexible work hours, the ability to work from home when possible, and progressive benefit plans that include a Wellness Spending Account. Shopify, for example, offers a WSA that includes eligible spending categories such as gym memberships, financial planners and house cleaning.Related: We Offer Time Off to Volunteer as a Unique Perk — But It’s Also Good for Business5. Listen well.Gen Z was raised to be curious, they want to be part of the solution and make a difference. Ask for their input and ideas, whether obtained through survey responses or conversations. The insights garnered from engagement are what facilitate innovation. Their contribution may improve a product line, make a process more efficient, or change the culture of your organization in a meaningful way. Above all else, when an organization values curiosity, it creates a positive feedback loop which encourages further idea sharing and reinforces that employees are heard and appreciated.Across nearly every industry and market, employers were caught flat-footed for the paradigm shift that millennial workers represented. The next decade of business will be dominated by employers who take the lessons learned from adapting to millennials and apply them to Gen Z. By engaging their curiosity, unique skills and tech-savvy minds, you can distinguish yourself as an employer of choice and create a real competitive advantage. 5 min read Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Luggage screening intensified after Australia airplane attack plot thwarted

first_img Monday, July 31, 2017 Share CANBERRA, Australia — Security remained heightened in airports around Australia with more intense screening of luggage after law enforcement officials thwarted what a police chief described on Monday as a “credible attempt to attack an aircraft.”Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Border Protection Minister Peter Dutton declined to comment on newspaper reports that Islamist extremists planned to kill the occupants of a plane with poison gas and that a homemade bomb was to be disguised as a kitchen mincer.“Police will allege they had the intent and were developing the capability,” Turnbull told Australian Broadcasting Corp.Turnbull announced on Sunday that “a terrorist plot to bring down an airplane” had been disrupted, but revealed few details.Four men arrested in raids in Sydney late Saturday – two Lebanese-Australian fathers and their sons – had yet to be charged.Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin said a court ruled Monday that the four could be detained without charge for seven days from their arrest under counterterrorism laws.“We believe we have disrupted a legitimate and credible attempt to attack an aircraft,” Colvin told reporters without elaborating.Colvin has repeatedly described the threat as a “device,” without mentioning whether it was explosive.“The plot that we are investigating we believe was an attempt to put a device onto an aircraft, but beyond that the speculation is just that _ speculation,” he said, adding that police had “many working theories.”More news:  Visit Orlando unveils new travel trade tools & agent perksColvin and the government will not comment on media reports that the suspects were not previously known to Australian security officials and that their arrests followed a tip from a foreign intelligence agency.“Australians can be assured that we have very fine intelligence services and we moved extremely quickly on this one and, as you can see, with the right outcomes,” Turnbull said. The Australian newspaper cited multiple anonymous sources saying that the plotters were constructing a “non-traditional” explosive device that could have emitted a toxic, sulfur-based gas to kill or immobilize everyone on the aircraft.Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported that the plotters planned to make a bomb from wood shavings and explosive material inside a piece of kitchen equipment such as a mincing machine.Police raided five homes Saturday and removed a domestic grinder and a mincer used to make sausage, the newspaper said. The plot involved smuggling the device onto a flight from Sydney to the Middle East, possibly Dubai, as carry-on luggage, the newspaper said.Fairfax Media reported that the bomb was found in a home in the inner-city suburb of Surry Hills, a few doors from the local mosque.Turnbull declined to say whether the group was guided by someone overseas.“It’ll be alleged that that this was an Islamist extremist, terrorist motivation,” the prime minister said.More news:  Windstar celebrates record-breaking bookings in JulyDutton, the border protection minister, urged travellers to arrive at Australian airports two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights to allow time for more screening. Luggage should be kept to a minimum and those accompanying travellers should not enter secured parts of terminals. He declined to detail the threat that the security staff were searching for.“There’ll be lots of speculation around what the intent was … but I don’t want to add to that,” Dutton told Nine Network television. “Our focus now really is making sure that people who are planning a terrorist attack are thwarted.”Security has been increased at Sydney Airport since Thursday because of the plot and has since been increased in all major Australian international and domestic terminals.Turnbull would not speculate on how long airport security would remain elevated. “They will be required for as long as the threat is assessed as requiring them,” he said.Australia’s terrorist threat level remained unchanged at “probable.”Australia is a staunch ally of the United States and partner in military campaigns in the Middle East. The Islamic State group has highlighted Australia as a Western target. The plot was the 13th disrupted by police since Australia’s terrorist threat level was elevated in 2014. Five plots have been executed.
