Suspect in 1997 slaying arrested

first_imgVeronica Hernandez Linasero was brutally raped and strangled in 1997, her body abandoned on the grounds of an Eagle Rock church by an assailant whose identity eluded police for nearly a decade. The Los Angeles Police Department’s Cold Case Unit now believes it has found the man who killed the 49-year-old single mother – Richard Bojorques, 45, of Pasadena. DNA evidence was the key. “Without this, there was no link between the suspect and the victim,” LAPD Detective Rick Jackson said Thursday. “But the DNA matched, and with additional evidence, we were able to forensically link him to the scene as well as to the victim’s body.” For Linasero’s only daughter, Marlene Barrios, the arrest brought some relief to the most painful episode of her life. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. You’re all set! “I’ve told her, `You know, Mom, you can rest,’ ” Barrios, 37, said, recalling a recent visit to her mother’s grave. “God has taken care of you and taken care of us. And he will take care of him.” Bojorques, who was being held without bail, is charged with sodomy and murder with the special circumstance of rape, which makes him eligible for the death penalty. He has not entered a plea, and prosecutors have not said whether they will pursue a death sentence. Bojorques was arrested at his parole agent’s office Feb. 21. He had previously been convicted of burglary and narcotics charges and was freed Jan. 5, Jackson said. It’s unclear, the detective said, how he crossed paths with Linasero.
