Ferndale surrenders early lead in loss

South Africa joins global tourism drive

first_img5 May 2011 President Jacob Zuma gave the promotion of South Africa’s burgeoning tourism industry a boost by signing “The Golden Book”, a campaign by global tourism pacesetters, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum on Africa in Cape Town on Wednesday. Zuma became the first African head of state to make an entry in the book, which is a joint initiative by the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) to position travel and tourism higher in the global agenda. The campaign seeks to mobilise recognition and support for travel and tourism from world leaders by demonstrating its crucial role in economic growth, job creation and development. “We take tourism very seriously in this country, given its job creation potential,” Zuma said. “That is why we have identified tourism as one of the six job drivers in our New Growth Path framework. “Tourism’s contribution to the GDP of our economy has increased from just less than five percent in 1994 to an estimated 7.7 percent in 2010.” Zuma said the country’s tourism sector was well placed to address unemployment “given its labour-intensive nature.” The President said tourism jobs were not only created in the travel and tourism industry, but also in the manufacturing, financial services, agriculture, healthcare and others areas of the economy. South Africa aims to increase the number of foreign arrivals from 7-million in 2009 to 15-million by 2020. “We plan to increase tourism’s total contribution to the economy from R189-billion in 2009 to R499-billion by 2020,” Zuma said. “Most importantly, we want to create 325 000 new tourism jobs by 2020. We will do everything possible to promote and grow the tourism sector so that we can achieve these developmental goals.” Among those who attended the signing ceremony were WTTC President David Scowsill, UNWTO ethics committee president Dawid de Villiers, and Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk. I showed one graph (see Image #2, below) from the Texas A&M research on pressure drops in flex versus sheet metal ducts. What the data show is that if you pull the inner liner of flex duct perfectly tight, flex performs the same as rigid sheet metal ducts. That’s not just three sets of data below in image 2; it’s six. Flex and sheet metal pressure drops for 6-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch ducts. They’re the same, which means you can size flex the same as rigid… if you pull it perfectly tight.Then I got into the Manual D duct design process, which is all stuff that’s in my duct design series here in the blog. I briefly discussed available static pressure, total effective length, and friction rate. I concluded that the pressure drops of fittings dominate the process… unless you install flex like I showed in some of those photos in my introduction. Then we really don’t know what’s happening, but we do know that you’re choking off the air flow.Every turn and every piece of flex not pulled tight results in pressure drops. How many places do you see in image 3 below where you might have a problem? (Thanks to Thomas Battoe for this a-maze-ing photo!)Chris Van Rite and the ASHRAE duct calculatorAt that point, I yielded the floor to Chris and he spoke more about that Texas A&M research on pressure drops. He also mentioned the Air Duct Council (a trade association for flex duct) and their guide called Flexible Duct Performance & Installation Standards. (Yes, I’ve written about that, too.)He wrapped up his part by showing how to use the new ASHRAE duct calculator. (He also managed to get 500 of the calculators donated so everyone at Summer Camp got to take one home.) I covered how to use the duct calculator in my duct design series, so you can check that out here in the blog.Is rigid duct the answer?Well, maybe. In our third part HVAC design here at Energy Vanguard, we design a lot of systems that use rigid duct for the trunk lines and flex for the branches. That’s not one of ours in Image 4 below, but it’s the same concept.But as with just about everything, it’s not the product or the material that matters. I’ve got some fun photos of rigid duct systems, too. I have no idea what the designers/installers were thinking when they created this thing you see in Image 5 below.Flex duct systems that workFlex duct systems can work great. And they really are way better for noise control than rigid duct. You just have to design and install it properly. Some people can do that, like my friends in California. In Image 6 (below) you can see a beautiful flex duct system done by Mike MacFarland and his company Energy Docs.I also showed some work done by Gavin Healy and Dan Perunko of Balance Point Home Performance and by a Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Alabama that Energy Vanguard’s own Andy Bell worked on. We had given a presentation together (along with Robert Bean) at the beginning of this year at the ASHRAE conference in Las Vegas, so he got us on the Summer Camp program to discuss flex duct. He travels around Texas teaching contractors about duct systems and air flow and was on the ASHRAE committee that developed the new duct calculator showing the results for flex duct not pulled tight.This was the first time I’ve spoken at Summer Camp, so I was a bit nervous. Before my talk I kept asking people if they’d take my place. One person even considered it seriously. When the time finally came for us to go up in front of 450 really smart people, I calmed down a bit. After Joe Lstiburek introduced us, I spoke first, then Chris spoke, and at the end, I came back to wrap things up. Here’s the video of my introduction. Man stranded on local train for 18 hours

first_imgA 46-year-old Malad resident survived on sheer faith aboard a stranded local train for 18 hours before being reunited with his family early on Wednesday morning. A Jain by faith, he only had tea on Tuesday morning as he is observing the holy period of paryushan, and went for nearly 24 hours without having anything till he reached home.Amarkant Jain (46), an IT consultant, left his residence on 7.45 a.m. on Tuesday, having had his last proper meal at 6 p.m. on Monday, when the rain was still moderate in its intensity and trains were running smoothly, to deliver a lecture at the V.N. Bedekar college in Thane. He caught a train back home around 12.50 p.m., which reached Kurla before getting stuck in the waterlogged tracks.“The water was knee deep at the time and our train was caught between a boundary wall and another train. As the day passed, the water rose up to waist level and walking through it, especially in the dark was not an option. I kept speaking to my wife Mayura whenever I could, as I also had to preserve my cell phone’s battery, while waiting for help to arrive and also ensuring no one panicked in our compartment,” Mr. Jain told The Hindu.Back home, Mrs. Jain had to ensure her two children and mother-in-law did not panic as well as keep up a steady stream of tweets to draw the attention of the authorities to her husband’s plight.“Deputy Commissioner of Police Samadhan Pawar with the Railway Police, and a woman officer with the control room kept talking to me throughout the night till the water receded and the police could reach the train, which was the sixth in a line of stranded trains,” Mrs. Jain said.Mr. Jain reached home at 7.45 a.m. on Wednesday, 24 hours after he left for work on Tuesday.
