Sakash: OSU can cast aside anyone except UW

first_imgGo watch Jared Sullinger play ball. Seriously, go do it. Then, the next time he plays, watch him again because the kid’s a freak. His game makes for must-watch television every time he steps on the hardwood. Forget about the idea that he’s the best freshman in the country because, really, he’s the best player in the NCAA. He plays like Zach Randolph except ten feet above the rim.And if the freshman alone doesn’t instill trepidation in the hearts of any other program in the country by himself, the rest of his team ought to because they are loaded like a baked potato. In early November, a worry surfaced that no team in the NCAA possessed any legitimate star power; that there were no NBA talent-riddled rosters like a North Carolina of 2009 or a Florida of 2007.Unfortunately for the rest of the country, Ohio State recently disabused that perception; just ask JaJuan Johnson and the Purdue Boilermakers, whom the Buckeyes torched by 23 points on Tuesday. And the Buckeyes’ recent dominance is a bad omen for the rest of the Big Ten.If Purdue, which was really Ohio State’s only preseason competition, can’t compete for the Big Ten title, then what other program has a shot?Well, it’s not Illinois. Demetri McCamey has improved every season during his time in Champaign, but the collection of B-talent around him isn’t enough to worry Thad Matta’s Buckeyes.Allegedly, Brandon Paul was going to complement McCamey well and put the Illini back on the college basketball map after swiftly disappearing from it after 2005’s run to the title game. But McCamey has only played okay, Paul has yet to live up to the expectations and the once-hyped Illini only linger towards the bottom of the polls. In Illinois’ tilt with the top ranked Buckeyes down in Champaign last week, they had no answer for Sullinger when the big man took over. It’s not going to be Michigan State, either. Izzo’s squad sits sixth in the conference with debilitating losses to Illinois, Purdue and an improved, though still inferior, Penn State. The Spartans have Kalin Lucas back and have seen nice contributions from senior guard Durrell Summers and junior forward Draymond Green, but they simply don’t have the firepower to hang around with the top teams in the country, a list headlined by Ohio State. It’s not gong to be Minnesota. Tubby Smith may have the Gophers playing the best basketball to come out of the Land of 10,000 Lakes in a long time, which shows what coaching, and subsequently, what a coach’s recruiting can do for any program (unless your Isaiah Thomas), but they are still a ways off from hanging banners any time soon. Minnesota had a shot at Ohio State earlier this month in Columbus and actually made them sweat for a while. They too, however, came up short when a three-pointer that would have sent the game to overtime rattled off the front iron as time expired.Minnesota’s Trevor Mbakwe, the Gophers’ leading rebounder, actually matches up with Sullinger. Mbakwe held the freshman-phenom to 15 points and 12 boards back on January 9th, but when Sullinger’s production went down, David Lighty went up for the Buckeyes as he scored 19 big points. There’s one ranked Big Ten team left that might have a shot to take down the Buckeyes; one team, which shoots almost 40 percent from behind the arc, has the size to match up with the strength of the Buckeyes and the reputation to pull off big wins on big stages. That’s right, it’s Northwestern.Only kidding, it’s not Northwestern. The team that can catch Ohio State is Wisconsin. The x-factor in college basketball remains three-point shooting. On any given night the Badgers can shoot the lights out and, as Ohio State is a longer team, staying outside the arc might be the way Bo Ryan will want to attack the Buckeyes. The Badgers have players in Josh Gasser, Mike Bruesewitz and Tim Jarmusz with the type of size that can give Ohio State’s William Buford and David Lighty a tough time. But the three will have to step up and execute on the defensive end to keep Buford and Lighty off of the score sheet.Jon Leuer is going to pose a problem for Sullinger as well, as Sullinger hasn’t often matched up with an athletic big man that can shoot the outside jumper. And if Leuer gets in foul trouble, Nankivil can put another body on the big man as well.On paper, the Badgers almost match up well against the nation’s top team. But that’s only on paper. It always comes down to execution.Luckily for Wisconsin, the first of the two games remaining with the Buckeyes takes place at the Kohl Center where the Badgers are notorious for holding serve. The rest of the conference schedule, less two games against Purdue, is really favorable for the Badgers. Ohio State, however, has trips to Minnesota, Purdue and Wisconsin yet before them. It’s quite possible the Buckeyes are a runaway train to Big Ten glory, but if any team can be the cow on the tracks, it has to be Wisconsin.last_img read more

Australia favourites as Ashes fever descends on Brisbane

first_img StumbleUpon Related Articles Submit Australia and England have a rivalry steeped in history, one that particularly comes to the fore whenever the two nations are pitted against each other in a sporting arena. That is epitomised by the Ashes, with the tiny urn the ultimate prize for whichever side can hold their nerve in the various cauldrons of noise over the course of the next two months.Criticism has been laid at England’s feet since their squad announcement, while the home side have been lambasted in recent days for comments coming out their camp.Despite this though Australia are listed as favourites worldwide, with England mere rank outsiders.Rick Wallace, Media Relations Manager at Australian gambling company Tabcorp, gave an insight into how an Ashes Series is viewed ‘down under,’ and the huge numbers expected to be waged by punters across the five tests: “It’s one of the biggest events on our sporting calendar both from a betting and interest point of view.“We are expecting to hold around the $5 million mark for the Ashes series. In context, this is approximately the same hold as what we had for the McGregor v Mayweather fight a few months ago“While the Aussies are favourites, England certainly are in with a chance. There remains uncertainty around Australia’s line up, and while we expect plenty of patriotic money for Australia, there will no doubt also be support for England.”What was once a series entrenched with Australian dominance, with all eight contests between 1989 and 2003 won by the Aussies, has developed into one that the hosts normally come out triumphant.Only once in the last eight series have an away side managed to come out victorious after five tests, with England taking advantage of a poor Australian side in 2010/11 to emerge on the right side of a 3-1 scoreline. In the sport mad nation of Australia, cricket quite rightly plays a huge part, however, as Wallace points out The Ashes has major competition from consumers throughout the country, adding: “While the Ashes is big, the trend from a betting point of view with cricket is moving towards the Big Bash.”The first Ashes test gets underway at The Gabba in Brisbane at midnight tonight UK time, ie the first minutes of Thursday 23 November, and 10am local time. He and Group Captain F.A. Gyimah-Kwakye, the General Secretary of the G.G.A.demonstrated how Golf is played with clubs and showed how and when the different clubs are used, by amateurs who should be rewarded less than $250 and professionals who earn billions of dollars, like American hero Tiger Woods.Mr. Aggrey revealed that most of the best Golf courses are in the Western region where most expatriates working for mining companies have developed wonderful courses and blessed with good weather that preserve the grass. Some of Ghana’s best Golf courses can be found in Achimota, Tafo, Kumasi, Bob Nam Kin and Tema. The one – day seminar which attracted experienced and rising sports journalists from television, radio, print and internet was organized by Prime Val Consult. Health Ministry Brings in Mental Health Drugs Worth US$100K

first_imgThe Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOH&SW) has disclosed that a shipment of US$100,000 worth of much needed mental health drugs has arrived in the country.  According to the Assistant Health Minister for Preventive Services, Mr. Tolbert Nyenswah, who disclosed the news last Wednesday, the drugs will be distributed to various health facilities, where trained mental health clinicians are stationed throughout the 15 political sub-divisions of the country. He stated that mental illness is a challenge to everyone in the country, therefore, the Ministry has taken a serious measure in implementing the mandate of the National Mental Health Policy by importing the mental health drugs. The Asst. Health Minister stated that for some time now, many of the health facilities and clinics that are treating mental health cases have been stocked-out on the essential mental health drugs of the country.“This gloomy [dark] scenario changed recently when the Government of Liberia responded in an unprecedented move to address the critical and dire need to procure drugs for the nation to treat Liberians most vulnerable and most in need of care.”He added that the lack of mental health drugs  and constant stock-out have been a problem that have existed for some time now and has impeded the government’s efforts to implement the aspects of the Essential package of Health Services (EPHS) which relates to accessibility to mental health services.Nyenswah said a 2012 study conducted by Carter Center, showed that 75 percent  of psychotropic drugs authorized for importation between 2008 to 2011 were for NGOs and only 13 percent came from the new essential medical list, which includes drugs that more closely align with WHO recommendations as essential mental health drugs.Nyenswah: “This shipment of mental health drugs is the first post-conflict procurement and oversight by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.”Meanwhile, the mental health coordinating unit is the arm of the Ministry that is directly responsible for ensuring the implementation of the mandates of the National Mental Health Policy, which sees this much needed boost to compliment mental health activates being conducted throughout the country in raising awareness and reducing stigmatization of people with mental illness. The Mental Health Coordinating Unit is currently working with various sectors in creating mechanisms and ensuring the dissemination of relevant mental health information throughout the country and has developed a curriculum to build the capacity of general community health volunteers in identifying basic mental health symptoms at the community level, educating and making the necessary referral to the appropriate service level, as well as various categories of health workers and also training on mental health.Only a few years ago when the National Mental Health Policy was being crafted, there were no trained mental health workforce to deal with the enormous task of treating, rehabilitating and reintegrating people with mental health conditions back into their natural environments but today, through the support and partnership of Carter Center Mental Health Program, 100 trained mental health clinicians have been added to the workforce and the sixth cohort of 23 mental health clinicians is underway at the Phebe Hospital in Bong County.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
