And they’re off … to Santa Anita Park for opening day

first_img• Photo Gallery: Opening Day at Santa Anita Park Related Article” ARCADIA – There are two types of women, Thelma Barque figures – those chasing down deals after Christmas and those handicapping fast favorites at the track. Barque of El Monte was among the motley regulars, casual tourists and picnicking families already at Santa Anita Park by noon Wednesday for opening day’s first post, which according to track officials drew more than 30,000 visitors throughout the day. “After our Christmas dinner, my sister was cutting ads out of the paper, but I had all my racing forms out,” Barque said. Their track tradition is more about social ritual, she explained. “You get a hot dog, you get a cup of coffee, you visit the gift shop, and most of all, meet your friends,” Escamilla said. Her secret to picking the right horse? Despite tell-tale racing forms and handwritten notes, she dodged the question. “You got to have money and you got to have luck,” she said. Others weren’t content to leave it to luck. After more than 50 years of coming to Santa Anita, Jerry Lunn of Highland Park banks on the accomplishments of a horse’s bloodline and its rider. Ted James takes his chances. “I’m a long-shot bettor,” said the Altadena resident, because an unlikely horse can make for big returns on his small bets. Overlooking the steeds circling the paddock ring, Robert Frasier of San Gabriel kept an eye out for “a horse with a good rear end.” Recent rains almost put the kibosh on the track’s 71st opener after a $10 million synthetic track surface installed last summer didn’t drain as expected. It looks like sand, but the synthetic fibers, silica sand and rubber grains that make the “Cushion Track” were designed to be less taxing on the animals. Nearly $1 million in repairs kept the track unavailable for pre-season training for most of the month, said Mike Willman, publicity director. But it’s still holding on to more water than is optimal, he said. “It’s better now, but we’re being honest and saying it’s not perfect,” Willman said. todd.ruiz@sgvn.com (626) 578-6300, Ext. 4444 www.insidesocal.com/pasadenapolitics160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. But inside the Paddock Room, it’s serious business. A few long tables and plastic chairs over from where Barque sat circling and erasing her picks, Josephine Escamilla compared notes and exchanged quips with her brothers. Ever since their father instilled equestrian values into their household, the Escamilla siblings descend upon Santa Anita as a regular tradition. “His very last words before he died were, `No more Shoemaker,”‘ Josephine Escamilla said of her father’s fixation on the sport and fondness for legendary jockey Willie Shoemaker. last_img

Hanis Reloaded: an ID in 48 hours

first_img7 November 2003The department of home affairs is to revamp its information technology systems in an effort to fully computerise the department’s operations. The department will also re-launch the National Identification System (Hanis), which will be called Hanis Reloaded. Hanis, approved by Cabinet in 1995, enables the cross-reference of fingerprints and identification information.Hanis Reloaded and the Integrated Client Service Console (ICSC) will be the department’s fully integrated system, linking all regional and sub-offices to the Pretoria head office’s database. The system will enable South Africans anywhere in the country to have their identity document applications processed electronically and their fingerprints, photographs and signatures recorded digitally. The information will be checked immediately against a database and 48 hours later, a person will have their ID.Briefing the media in Johannesburg on Thursday, Home Affairs director-general Barry Gilder said the new system will arrest the potential for fraud that is prevalent in the department. He said the old HANIS was plagued by mismanagement after key personnel in the project resigned, leaving a void in the running of the system.“This revolution is based on our dream of a fully computerised department, in respect of both our internal processes and our interface with our clients,” Gilder said.He said the introduction of the integrated database system will lay the basis for the issuing of a new ID card.“Our preliminary estimate is that such a system will allow us to issue an ID within 48 hours,” Gilder said.Source: BuaNews Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

Build Your Own iPhone App with New Service from Sweb Apps

first_imgSweb Apps could function as a way for businesses to distribute mobile coupons, too. With buttons like “Photo Gallery” which can be renamed to anything you like (such as “Coupons” or “Specials”), businesses could update their apps with pre-designed mobile coupons, if they so wished. Lots of Potential, Future PlansNot that long ago, we wondered why there weren’t more iPhone applications for businesses available in the App Store. It’s possible that was because the tools to make building mobile apps easy were simply not good enough. With Sweb Apps, though, this could quickly change. Being able to build a mobile application with no technical know-how using a dead-simple onscreen guide is the sort of mobile service we’re sure many businesses have been dreaming about. (At least we hope so! We would love to track the sales at a few of our favorite local stores via our iPhones.)The company plans to introduce more features into their service in the future including premium buttons, Flash-based content (assuming Apple ever approves Flash on the iPhone), in-app advertising opportunities, and more. Next year, the company also plans to launch app builders for other mobile platforms including Android, Blackberry, and Palm Pre. A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… A company called Sweb Apps has just launched a new service which lets anyone build iPhone apps, even if you don’t have a technical background. The service is aimed primarily at small to medium-sized businesses who don’t have an in-house or on-call engineering team capable of developing mobile applications. Instead, using the Sweb Apps website, business owners can create their own iPhone application themselves in as little as five minutes, says the company. On the newly launched site at swebapps.com, a big orange button reading “Start Building” is all you need to click to get started creating your own iPhone application. Then, only six steps later, you’ll have a completed iPhone application ready for App Store submission, a process which Sweb Apps will handle for you, too. How to Build Your AppSince the service is designed for businesses, one of the first steps is to select your particular industry from the provided categories. At the moment, these include: Restaurant, Retail Store, Business, Non-Profit, Government, Education, Entertainment, and Customization, a category which lets you design your own personalized app if what you’re creating doesn’t fit into one of the other categories. Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… From within each of these sections, there are various buttons to choose from. For example, in the “Restaurant” category, you can add buttons like “menu,” “reservations,” “map,” etc. There are even buttons for Facebook and Twitter which allow you to direct customers to your Facebook and Twitter profiles. Sample layouts are provided, too. After picking your buttons, you create your Sweb Apps account and submit the information about your business. The fifth step is to customize the application with your business’s personalized info. In the case of the restaurant app, for example, that would mean filling out the menu, listing your hours and address, and so on. The final step is to submit payment. Prices vary depending on which package you choose. Packages with 4 buttons are $200, 6 buttons are $300, and 8 buttons are $400. In addition, Sweb Apps charges a $50 one-time setup fee and a $25/month hosting fee. For an extra $10/month, business owners can optionally choose to add on a simple analytics package called “App Tracker” which lets you track the number of downloads and button clicks. By tracking this sort of information, it’s easy to tell which buttons are accessed most and which are being ignored, allowing you to re-design the app to better engage your customers. Customizations While the process of app building is extremely simple, and yes, we were able to create a basic app in a matter of minutes (we stopped short of paying for it of course!), the end result is a somewhat basic-looking application. But there are a couple of things you can do to spruce it up a little. For one, you’re able to select your own background color, and this can even be a custom color of your choosing. Sweb Apps also lets you upload your own button images instead of using the defaults provided. This would definitely give your app a more unique and personalized look, so it’s worth looking into. If you’re not all that handy with Photoshop yourself, it would be a good idea to hire a designer or crowdsource the project through a site like 99Designs or CrowdSpring and have someone create custom buttons for you. The Best Part: Real-Time Updates! If anything ever changes and needs to be updated, you simply return to your Sweb Apps account and make the changes there. Instead of waiting on Apple to approve the update as is done with traditional iPhone applications, the updates to Sweb Apps go live in real-time thanks to the company’s hosted Content Management System. With Sweb Apps, all the app’s content is housed in the company’s own database which is why it’s able to be updated on-the-fly (and why there’s a monthly hosting fee). The possibilities here are endless. This feature allows a business to promote one-time events, specials, coupons, sales, or anything else that would be offered on a limited time basis. This, in fact, may be the best feature of the app builder. Real-time communication with your customer base through the mobile is exactly what applications should provide, but when relying on Apple and their mysterious approval process, the delays involved often prevent this from happening. sarah perezcenter_img Related Posts Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#web 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Amid contrasting claims, J&K Governor dissolves Assembly

first_img Senior PDP leader Naeem Akhtar said the BJP-backed PC claim only hinted at “illegitimate means the two parties were planning to employ in J&K to cobble together the required numbers.”“Initially, the BJP claimed an alliance of the NC, PDP and Congress was on the directions of Pakistan. It was bizarre. The BJP’s bid to project the head of a two-MLA party as new chief minister only showed the party’s desperation and illegal design to break parties here. Unfortunately, the BJP was supporting a leader who started his political career with a gun in his hand against the state of India and whose family still preaches separatism. And they call it nationalism,” said Mr. Akhtar.Undemocratic, says SozSenior Congress leader Saifuddin Soz termed the Governor’s decision “unconstitutional and undemocratic.”“Ms. Mufti should approach the court as the Governor dissolved the Assembly at the behest of the Centre,” said Mr. Soz.Earlier, in an eventful day, arch rivals, the National Conference and the PDP, decided to join hands to form a unity government, with the Congress openly offering its support.“The move was made with the sole aim of safeguarding the special status of J&K, which is under threat,” said PDP leader Altaf Bukhari.Ms. Mufti said the move was also necessitated because “the Governor’s administration randomly was amending the laws concerning the special status of the State and the BJP had started engineering defections in other parties for furtherance of its political motives.”“Governor Malik’s [earlier] decision not to dissolve the Assembly till 2020 kept the options of horse trading open. It was a serious situation,” said Congress president G.A. Mir.The sudden decision to form the government came just a day after a senior PDP leader and MP Muzaffar Hussain Baigh publicly supported Mr. Lone and the BJP-backed third front, triggering hectic political parleys among the three parties.“The BJP had started engineering defections in other parties for furtherance of its political motives. The three parties came together to stop horse trading too,” said Ms. Mufti.PDP’s Bukhari is emerging as a consensus candidate to lead the alliance as of now.Senior BJP leader Kavinder Gupta said these parties were worried because their ground was slipping in the State, as reflected in the recent elections.“This alliance is coming together on the directions of Pakistan. Meetings were happening in Dubai too. Even the Hurriyat is onboard for this,” said Mr. Gupta. Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik on Wednesday dissolved the State Assembly, as Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peoples Conference (PC) separately staked claim to form a government after day-long political drama.“Governor Malik has passed an order in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by clause (b) of subsection (2) of Section 53 of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir to dissolve the Legislative Assembly,” read a Raj Bhavan communique.Earlier, two parties, the PDP and the PC, after daylong political wrangling, wrote to the Raj Bhavan on email and WhatsApp to stake claim to form the government, as the Governor’s official fax failed to respond.Former Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, in the letter, claimed that she had the support of 15 MLAs from National Conference and 12 MLAs of the Congress, in addition to her 29 MLAs, putting the total number at 56.The Assembly has 87 members and any party would require 44 MLAs’ support to form a government. On the other hand, PC chief Sajad Lone, who has two MLAs, claimed the support of 25 MLAs of the BJP and 18 more MLAs.National Conference leader and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah cried foul over the Governor’s decision. “The NC has been pressing for Assembly dissolution for five months now. It can’t be a coincidence that within minutes of Mehbooba Mufti Sahiba’s letter staking claim the order to dissolve the Assembly suddenly appears,” said Mr. Abdullah. Also Read J&K Assembly dissolved: as it happened last_img read more

Will resign as per orders from Cong. top brass: Vikhe-Patil

first_imgMaharashtra’s senior Congressman and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil on Thursday termed the comments about his late father made by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar as one reason behind his son, Sujay, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).Addressing a press conference in the Maharashtra Congress office, Mr. Vikhe-Patil said the decision to resign from the LoP’s post will be taken by the party high-command and not by someone from the State. He said it was his son’s personal decision to join the BJP on Tuesday. He will be contesting from Ahmednagar south seat.“Mr. Pawar’s comment against my father [Balasaheb Vikhe-Patil] was unwarranted. If he despises my family so much, I would rather not campaign for the NCP candidate in Ahmednagar,” Mr. Vikhe-Patil said. It was unfair to comment on someone who is no more, he said. Whether the Congress leader will campaign for other NCP candidates in rest of the Maharashtra is yet to be decided. “We have the election campaign committee, which will decide on who will campaign where. I will do whatever is told to me,” he said. At a press conference in Pune, Mr. Pawar said he had ensured the defeat of late Balasaheb Vikhe-Patil in the 1991 election, as he was contesting as an independent against Congress candidate Yashvantrao Gadakh. Later, Balasaheb Vikhe-Patil approached the High Court against Mr. Pawar and Mr. Gadakh. The HC imposed a ban on Mr. Pawar from contesting the polls for six years. The NCP chief fought against the ban in the Supreme Court and it was later lifted. The Vikhe-Patil and Pawar families have maintained a political feud for decades and Mr. Pawar’s statement three days ago reopened some old wounds. The NCP rejected Mr. Vikhe-Patil’s argument saying Mr. Pawar had not belittled anyone through his statement. “He only stated the facts. There was nothing demeaning in it. It was an order from then Congress president Rajiv Gandhi to ensure the defeat of Balasaheb Vikhe-Patil. As a Congressman, Mr. Pawar followed it,” NCP MLC Jitendra Awhad said. Meanwhile, Mr. Vikhe-Patil dismissed the possibility of his son’s candidature on the BJP ticket affecting the overall performance of Congress and NCP nominees in the State.last_img read more

Ground Broken for Sorrel Plant in Westmoreland

first_imgMinister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Roger Clarke, on Tuesday, June 4, officially broke ground for the establishment of a $24.8 million sorrel processing plant in Bethel Town, Westmoreland.Work on the 204-square metre modern facility, which will consist of production area, dry and cold storage, and sorting area, as well as office and bathroom conveniences, is already well underway, and is expected to be completed within three months. It will process sorrel to make jams, jellies and juices in addition to other value-added products, while significantly reducing the need for further imports for the Jamaican market. The processing facility, which will be operated by the Bethel Town Agricultural Co-operative Society, is being constructed by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) under its World Bank-funded Rural Economic Development Initiative (REDI).Minister Clarke, in welcoming the project, said it symbolises Government’s intention to “seriously deal” with import substitution.“This is yet another expression that this Government intends, in a very, very serious way, to deal with import substitution and to grow the agricultural sector. Why is it we have to import sorrel concentrate into this country to make drink, when sorrel can be grown almost anywhere in Jamaica?” he queried. He informed that the Ministry is working with the Mexican Government to train persons in the use of machinery to make the harvesting of sorrel easier. He noted that farmers in Central Westmoreland are already preparing lands to plant sorrel “so you had better hurry with the construction”.General Manager at JSIF, Loy Malcolm, informed that project will “transform over 120 acres of sorrel into value-added products”.“We at JSIF are happy to be a part of this and wish you all every success in this project,” she noted.Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, and Member of Parliament for Eastern Westmoreland, Hon. Luther Buchanan, in his remarks, said the ground breaking exercise “means a brighter future for agricultural development in the parish of Westmoreland”.The agro-processing facility is expected to realise a 400 per cent increase in revenue for farmers, while generating employment opportunities for community members.Contact: Glenis A.
